Benefits can no longer be built up in the firefighters’ pension scheme 2006 (special) section however any benefits already accrued are held in the firefighters’ pension scheme 2006 (special) until retirement.
From April 2022, all members moved to firefighters’ pension scheme 2015.
Retained firefighters
Benefits in the scheme
You may have benefits in the firefighters’ pension scheme 2006 (special) if you were a retained firefighter before 6 April 2022 and opted to join or have opted to joined as part of one of the Matthews ‘options exercises’ in 2014/15 or the current ongoing exercise.
You may also have:
- Left employment so now have a ‘deferred firefighters’ pension scheme 2006 (special) pension’ only; or
- Moved to the firefighters’ pension scheme 2015 and have benefits in both the firefighters’ pension scheme 2006 (special) and firefighters’ pension scheme 2015.
This section is sometimes referred to as the firefighters’ pension scheme 2006 modified section.
